We are pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Sumner, GDS Class of 2004, as our new Alumni Programs Director. He will leave his current position as Alumni Programs Coordinator at American University to begin work in the Advancement Office on July 9.
After graduating from Greensboro Day School, Michael earned bachelor’s and master’s of science degrees in Sport Management at NC State University. Upon completing his master’s, he interned with the Wolfpack Club in annual and capital giving, organizing special events, and redeveloping the Young Alumni Program, successfully recruiting 730 new members and renewals, and working with over 430 volunteers. Since the completion of the internship, he has been working in the American University Office of Alumni Relations where he oversees the Alumni Audit and Dinner with Alumni Programs, works with alumni volunteers to coordinate regional alumni events, writes articles for a monthly alumni e-newsletter, and partners in campus organizations to engage alumni and students.
He is looking forward to getting back home to Greensboro and to GDS.
Michael will succeed Kathy Davis who has served seven years as Alumni Director while also teaching Upper School math. Mrs. Davis will return to the math classroom full-time.
A committee, comprised mostly of alumni, assisted in the national search to choose the one candidate from among 50 who offered the best match of experience, skill and knowledge of GDS for the position.
