Posted 07/15/2012 10:34PM

Laptop Information for 2012–2013

Middle School Laptops

6th grade will lease their laptops from the school.  Computers will be distributed during the first few weeks of school.  On September 11th at 7:00 pm, we will hold the Student/Parent Laptop Orientation.

7th grade students will continue to lease laptops from the school.  On the first day of school, students will be given the same laptops that they used for 6th grade.

8th grade students will also continue to lease the laptops that they have been assigned.  Students should bring their computers and power cords on the first day of school in working order.

NEW 7th and 8th grade students will be provided with their leased laptops on the first day of school.

Upper School Laptops Model and Ordering Instructions

9th grade As part of our continued commitment to providing our students with the technology best suited to their developmental and academic needs, we will require that ALL 9th graders use a tablet.  The model we have chosen is the Lenovo X230

NEW 10th  and 11th grade To stay consistent with existing 10th and 11th grade students, new students should purchase the GDS Lenovo  X230.

NEW 12th grade students should call the Director of Educational Technology, Dana Smith, to discuss their options (288-8590 x448).

NEW 7th through 12th grade students should strongly consider taking the "Getting to Know Your Laptop" class offered by our Summer Programs.  In this course, students are introduced to GDS specific topics such as First Class email, Network login and Wireless access as well as the educational features of Word, Excel, Power Point and Internet research.  These skills are integral to the day-to-day activities of GDS students. The course is taught by Bill Welch, GDS Help Desk Director.

Below are directions for ordering your 9th - 12th grade child's laptop.

The Greensboro Day School/Lenovo Website is now ready to take laptop orders. Laptops ordered now will take approximately two weeks to ship.  The laptop models come bundled with all that is necessary for students to participate in their classes (laptop, AC adapter, battery, digitizer pen (stylus) and software).

Lenovo will be honoring the North Carolina tax-free weekend, Friday, August 3rd through Sunday, August 5th; all computers ordered on that weekend will not be charged sales tax.  We expect that all computers ordered on the tax-free weekend will be delivered by the first day of classes.  In the event that this is not the case, we will work to make sure that students are supported appropriately for the opening of school.

Whenever you speak with a Lenovo representative, please be sure to tell them that you are with Greensboro Day School and the bundle part number is X000067.  This assures that your computer is the exact model that we are using and comes with the necessary software.  There are optional accessories listed if you are interested in purchasing an additional adapter (Part #40Y7696), battery (Part #0A36317) or digitizer pen (stylus) (Part #41U3143).  Please research your laptop accessory options before ordering your laptop.  There is a Lenovo phone number on the website to call with questions or you may also call the GDS Help Desk (x243, Mr. Bill Welch) and/or Director of EducationalTechnology (x448, Dr. Dana Smith).

All computers ordered through the GDS/Lenovo site come with Accidental Damage Protection. This protection plan will cover most repairs to your child's computer. It does not cover loss or fire, so you might want to consider adding the computer to your homeowner's insurance.
