Early Childhood Philosophy

We believe that:

  • children learn through active engagement in their environment with the support and encouragement of dedicated and motivated teachers.
  • every child’s learning style is unique and as educators, it is our responsibility to know each child’s strengths and challenges in order to help them learn.

Therefore, we commit to:

  • focusing the majority of our work on social emotional development. Once children understand who they are as learners, feel confident in their abilities to participate as a group or individually, can stand up for their interest and beliefs, and work together cooperatively, the academics will follow.
  • establishing an enriching, trusting, fun educational environment so that children can sink their teeth into learning.
  • using our knowledge about child development and learning to incorporate activities that are age appropriate.
  • learning about each child’s strengths, interest, and needs in the group to ensure that our activities are individually appropriate
  • utilizing our knowledge of the social and cultural contexts in which our children live so that our classroom environment reflects the children and their families.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I decide whether my child should apply to Bitty Bengals or Junior Kindergarten?

Our Early Childhood Education program begins with a four-year-old Bitty Bengals classroom. Students in Bitty Bengals typically turn four by October. Junior Kindergarten students typically range from just over 4 ½ (4 years, 7 months) to young five (5 years, 2/3 months).

Is the admission process different for Bitty Bengals and Junior Kindergarten?

Yes, we believe in using a screening process that is developmentally appropriate for young children. Students applying to Bitty Bengals will come to campus for a “playdate” with other children applying to the program and are asked to submit a teacher recommendation from their preschool. Students applying to Junior Kindergarten will complete the ESP screening and submit a teacher recommendation.

How many students are in each classroom?

Bitty Bengals- 14 maximum

Junior Kindergarten – 16 maximum

What is the process if the classes are full?

A waiting list will be formed once the classes are at capacity.

How are students assessed throughout the school year?

Both classrooms use a portfolio based assessment along with a checklist of age appropriate skills. All of these materials are reviewed with the families during conferences. The portfolio is a keepsake at the end of the year.
