How Greensboro Day School Builds Friendships That Endure

by Amanda Carter & Jeff Topham

Walking across the campus at Greensboro Day School, you might see a kindergartner laughing on the playground beside their senior buddy or an eighth grader deep in conversation with a high school mentor. These moments aren’t just heartwarming—they’re intentional. At GDS, relationships are the foundation of learning. While rigorous academics remain essential, what truly defines the GDS experience is the sense of connection that empowers students to grow, be courageous, and feel valued and seen. It’s all part of our Core Value of Relationships for Life.

At GDS, strong relationships create a bond of trust between students and teachers, helping students feel empowered to take risks and pursue a wide range of intellectual interests. Students feel known and supported by their teachers, creating a safe environment where they can discover their potential, stretch beyond their comfort zone, and grow into confident, capable individuals prepared for life in college and beyond.

Building strong relationships among students is also a priority, with intentional programming designed to foster a schoolwide community of belonging by connecting students across all age groups. This programming begins with the youngest students on campus and continues long past graduation through a wide-reaching alumni network. These special experiences create opportunities for students of all ages to learn from one another, to feel seen and supported, and to understand the power of community.

In Greensboro Day School’s Preschool, community- and relationship-building is central to our program from the very earliest years. Children’s experiences during these early years set the tone for how they feel about school, so our program emphasizes establishing trust, building strong relationships, and creating a warm and caring environment where children feel both physically and emotionally safe.

Building Community Retreats (BCRs) are a recent program addition that has quickly become an essential part of the school year. These retreats allow students in grades 5–12 to share a memorable experience together—usually off campus. Whether it’s kayaking in Bulls Bay, hiking to the stunning overlook at Hanging Rock, or seniors painting their parking spaces, BCRs allow students to build friendships and strengthen connections across their entire grade. BCRs take place just after the start of school, ensuring that new students get the opportunity to have fun and bond with their classmates.

One of our most beloved programs is Bengal Buddies, which lets seniors and their kindergarten buddies get to know each other over the course of the school year. Seeing these buddies having fun together—playing on the playground, reading stories, and sitting side-by-side during assemblies—is both heartwarming and inspiring. Kindergartners eagerly look forward to seeing their senior buddy, and seniors get the incredible opportunity to serve as a mentor while leaving a lasting legacy of kindness.

Likewise, the Bengal Bigs program builds community by strengthening connections between middle and upper school students. Eighth graders get together regularly with their upper school mentor to enjoy lunch, work on activities together, or just to play games and hang out. This program gives eighth graders a friendly and familiar face in the Upper School while also introducing them to the academic opportunities, exciting extracurriculars, and vibrant student life that the Upper School has to offer. Meanwhile, the older students gain experience as leaders and mentors as they help to build community.

Relay races, an obstacle course, a dunk tank, and more—it must be Bengal Games! One of the most eagerly anticipated days of the school year, Bengal Games is a schoolwide day of fun and friendly competition in which teams of students of all ages enjoy a wide variety of games and activities together. This community-wide day of fun and games is built around camaraderie, teamwork, and school spirit, reminding everyone that being a Bengal means being part of a bigger family.

These programs all work together to foster the deep, lasting relationships that are at the heart of the GDS student experience. Relationships for Life means that these connections don’t just stay on campus—they extend far beyond graduation into an alumni community bonded by friendship, trust, and support.

Relationships for Life

“Once a Bengal, always a Bengal,” GDS students are reminded at graduation, and our alumni frequently share that their closest friendships began at GDS and have continued through every stage of life. Class reunions and regional get-togethers help our alumni stay connected and catch up with classmates and former teachers. GDS relationships truly last a lifetime.

At Greensboro Day School, relationships aren’t just part of the student experience—they are the experience. Through intentional connection, mentorship, and community-building, students gain far more than academic skills: they gain confidence, empathy, and lifelong friendships. Relationships for Life isn’t just something we talk about—it’s what makes the GDS experience unforgettable.
