Gail Bernstein ’76 Honored with Distinguished Alumni Award

Greensboro Day School is proud to recognize Gail Isaacson Bernstein ’76 as the recipient of the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award.

The Alumni Association established this award in 1991 to recognize alumni who demonstrate extraordinary service to their community, distinction in their profession, and meaningful contributions to society. This year’s recipient, Gail Bernstein, exemplifies all of those qualities through her decades of leadership, service, and unwavering dedication to both Greensboro Day School and the greater Greensboro community.

A member of the second graduating class in GDS history, Gail graduated in 1976 and helped write “Lo Hearts Behold,” the alma mater still sung by students and alumni today. Her connection to Greensboro Day School has remained strong ever since.

Gail began working part-time at GDS in 1998, eventually becoming Assistant to the Head of School. Over nearly three decades, she served as a trusted confidante and advisor to three different Heads of School, providing continuity, wisdom, and institutional knowledge that helped guide the School through periods of growth and change.

Throughout her tenure, Gail became known for her calm and steady presence, as well as her deep understanding of the School and its community. Colleagues have described her as “smart, kind, easy to work with, superbly efficient, and hardworking.” Others have noted that “her wisdom and discretion have shaped countless decisions behind the scenes and have always been grounded in integrity and what is best for the School.”

In many ways, Gail became the person so many at GDS relied upon. Countless conversations around campus were often met with: “Let’s ask Gail,” or “I bet Gail will know.”

Beyond her impact at Greensboro Day School, Gail has also dedicated herself to serving the greater Greensboro community through numerous civic and volunteer leadership roles. She spent more than a decade serving on the Board of Temple Emanuel, including terms as President and chair of multiple committees. She also served on the Board of Greensboro Country Club in several leadership positions, including Inside Vice President, Outside Vice President, and President.

Her additional community involvement has included service on the Board of NCCJ, leadership roles with the Junior League of Greensboro, and volunteer leadership with the Natural Science Center, now the Greensboro Science Center.

Whether serving Greensboro Day School or the broader Greensboro community, Gail has consistently led with integrity, kindness, humility, and wisdom. Her impact on generations of students, faculty, alumni, and community members is immeasurable, and Greensboro Day School is proud to recognize her with the Distinguished Alumni Award.
