Artificial Intelligence at GDS
GDS prepares students not simply to use artificial intelligence, but to navigate an AI-informed world with wisdom, confidence, and integrity. That responsibility includes helping students understand both the possibilities and the risks of emerging technologies through purposeful instruction in digital literacy, digital citizenship, ethical decision-making, and the responsible use of AI.
Greensboro Day School is, and will always remain, a human-centered school community. Technology may support learning, creativity, and discovery, but it must never replace the relationships at the heart of a healthy life and a thriving school.
Preparing and protecting young people in this rapidly changing landscape requires a strong partnership between school and home. GDS will not endorse the use of AI companions as substitutes for authentic human connection or as sources of mental health counseling. Together, we must ensure that students learn to use AI thoughtfully without surrendering their judgment, their agency, their well-being, or their humanity. Human-First Boundaries for AI Use at GDS
AI is a tool for learning and productivity—not a substitute for human connection or professional care. Under no circumstances does the school endorse or permit the use of AI as a romantic partner, emotional companion, or primary source of counseling and personal guidance.
Students are expected to seek support and advice from trusted human relationships, including peers, educators, families, and qualified professionals, including the school’s counseling staff. Using AI to simulate or replace these roles is inconsistent with our values and our commitment to student well-being.
The GDS Core Value of Relationships for Life guides the development of human-first boundaries for AI use. The school is dedicated to fostering authentic connection, ensuring that student support remains grounded in real, accountable, and developmentally appropriate relationships.
