AI Academic Integrity & Permission Guide
The Greensboro Day School Community Cornerstones and Core Values are the driving forces of our culture of intellectual honesty.
In our use of AI, we uphold a community of mutual trust and respect through a combination of teacher guidance, transparent student practices, and a steadfast commitment to our Honor Code. Upholding the Honor Code, verifying facts, and maintaining human agency are non-negotiable.
AI should be used intentionally and purposefully to support the specific learning outcomes defined by the teacher. AI is a tool to enhance learning; it does not replace critical thinking.
To maintain academic integrity, allow for faculty guidance, and safeguard our privacy and data, students must use school-approved tools with their greensboroday.org user account. Teachers might also provide students with additional AI tools to use.
Teachers will provide clear guidelines for AI use on assignments using the AI Permission Framework. Likewise, students should always check with their teachers about allowable AI use for an assignment and consult the AI Permission Framework for details.

No AI
Definition
AI is not used in any capacity.
This is when 100% of the process and product is yours.
student responsibility
The student must complete work entirely without assistance; 100% of the process and product must be the student's own.
Transparency Statement
No AI disclosure is required because you haven’t used AI.

Use AI as a Tutor
Definition
AI explains concepts and creates review exercises.
This is when you ask AI to teach and explain concepts or how to do something. AI does not work on the assignment.

The student must use AI only to teach, explain, or practice a concept or a skill.

Use AI to Brainstorm
Definition
AI assists with brainstorming and outlining.
This is when you explore ideas with AI or use it to help you understand the text you are reading. You, not AI, create your own product.

The student must use AI to explore ideas or understand text; the final product must be created by the student, not the AI.

Use AI to Give Feedback
Definition
AI provides feedback on a student’s original writing or project.
This is when you create the product first, and then you learn from AI’s suggestions. Include in your prompt: “Do not write it for me or change my language/image. Only give me feedback.

The student must maintain an original voice; learn from AI suggestions rather than using output verbatim.

Use AI to Analyze
Definition
AI summarizes and analyzes.
This is when you manually verify all information generated by AI. AI must never be the sole source of analysis. AI can output hallucinations or biased results.

The student must use AI to strengthen personal thinking; manually verify all information to avoid hallucinations or bias.

Use AI as Co-Pilot
Definition
AI is a collaborator throughout the entire creation process and the final product.
This is when you are the expert, and you use AI as an assistant. You make the decisions and check all output to ensure that it reflects you.

The student must provide high-level oversight; the student remains the "captain" and expert, making all final decisions.
