Learning Support

The Greensboro Day School Learning Support Team provides students and families with comprehensive and coordinated support services throughout their time at GDS.

Our exceptional team of professionals works closely with families on how best to meet the needs of children. They work daily with teachers, students, and parents to help young people reach their full academic and social/emotional potential by offering remediation and enrichment one-on-one, in small groups, and in a classroom setting.

Whole Child Health

Our holistic approach includes collaboration with the Counseling Department and Health Center in order to address the academic, social/emotional, and physical health needs of each student.

What We Do

Learning Specialists provide appropriate, need-based, and heart-driven services to our students in order for the desired results to be accessible and attainable.

Lower School

The Lower School Learning Support Coordinators offers both enrichment and remediation through small group work, one-on-one intervention, and classroom inclusion. Learning Support Coordinators provide tools and materials to both teachers and students to assist with students’ diverse learning styles. Professional reading for educators as well as parent education resources are available to help families better understand their child’s learning profile.

Tutoring

Fee-based tutoring may be coordinated through our Learning Support Coordinators and takes place off campus. Families are provided with names of tutors available to support specific academic needs.

Math Specialists

The Lower School Math Specialists work with students, teachers, and families in kindergarten–fourth grade to provide instruction through small groups, one-on-one intervention, and classroom inclusion in the form of enrichment and/or remediation

Middle School

The Middle School Learning Support Coordinator offers both enrichment and support through small group work, one-on-one intervention, and classroom inclusion. The Fifth Grade Forward program includes time with the Middle School Learning Support Coordinator exploring Executive Function Skills. These skills are reviewed at the beginning of each year with grades 6–8.

The Middle School Learning Support Coordinator also works with students during study hall throughout the year as well as during class. The Middle School Learning Support Coordinator provides tools and materials to both teachers and students to assist with students’ diverse learning styles. Tutoring and Academic Coaching

Fee-based tutoring may be coordinated through our Learning Support Coordinators and takes place off campus. Families are provided with names of tutors available to support specific academic needs upon request.

Academic Coaching takes place during study hall times or after school. This service is provided by vetted upper school students who volunteer their time to mentor middle school students.

Upper School

All ninth graders take a required CLEAR Lab course that provides exercises and instruction in maintaining balance between academic work, leisure time, and extracurricular activities. Topics include responsible use of technology and information (using both online and media center resources for personal research), organization, time management, test-taking skills, and study skills.

Tutoring and Academic Coaching

Academic coaching can be coordinated through our Learning Support Coordinators. Tutoring is a fee-based program and takes place off campus. Tutoring recommendations or referrals can be provided by Learning Support Coordinators upon request.
