Learning Support

The Greensboro Day School Learning Support Team provides students and families with comprehensive and coordinated support services throughout their time at GDS.

Our exceptional team of professionals works closely with families on how best to meet the needs of children. They work daily with teachers, students, and parents to help young people reach their full academic and social/emotional potential by offering remediation and enrichment one-on-one, in small groups, and in a classroom setting.

What We Do

Learning Support Coordinators provide appropriate, need-based, and heart-driven services to our students in order for the desired results to be accessible and attainable.

In addition, Learning Support Coordinators

collaborate with the Counselors and School Nurses to support the growth and development of the whole child.
work with teachers at each grade level to differentiate lessons and share strategies to support student needs.
coordinate additional services, including:
- one-on-one intervention with the Learning Support Coordinator or Math Specialist to monitor for possible learning gaps.
- encouraging medical check-ins to assess vision or hearing.
- connecting families with community resources that could provide speech/language services, occupational therapy, academic tutoring, or further educational testing.
plan and provide professional development and parent education.

Lower School

The Lower School Learning Support Coordinator offers both enrichment and remediation through small group work, one-on-one intervention, and classroom inclusion. The Learning Support Coordinator provides tools and materials to both teachers and students to assist with students’ diverse learning styles. Professional reading for educators as well as parent education resources are available to help families better understand their child’s learning profile.

Math Specialists

The Lower School Math Specialists work with students, teachers, and families in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade to provide instruction through small groups, one-on-one intervention, and classroom inclusion in the form of enrichment and/or remediation.

Literacy Specialist

The Lower School Literacy Specialist works with students, teachers, and families in Kindergarten through First Grade to provide instruction through small groups, one-on-one intervention, and classroom inclusion in the form of enrichment and/or remediation.

Tutoring

Fee-based tutoring may be coordinated through our Learning Support Coordinator. Families are provided with the names of tutors available to support specific academic needs upon request.

Middle School

The Middle School Learning Support Coordinator offers both enrichment and support through small group work, one-on-one intervention, and classroom inclusion. The Fifth Grade Forward program includes time with the Middle School Learning Support Coordinator exploring Executive Function Skills. These skills are reviewed at the beginning of each year with Grades 6–8.

The Middle School Learning Support Coordinator also works with students during study hall and classes throughout the year. The Middle School Learning Support Coordinator provides tools and materials to both teachers and students to assist with students’ diverse learning styles. Professional reading for educators as well as parent education resources are available to help families better understand their child’s learning profile.

Academic Coaching

Academic Coaching takes place during study hall times or after school. This service is provided by vetted upper school students who volunteer their time to mentor middle school students.

Fee-based tutoring may be coordinated through our Learning Support Coordinator. Families are provided with the names of tutors available to support specific academic needs upon request.

Upper School

The Upper School Learning Support Coordinator supports students by providing both academic enrichment and targeted remediation. Working with students individually, in pairs, or in small groups, the Coordinator serves as a vital liaison between classroom teachers and families to foster student growth and achievement. In collaboration with the Dean of Academics and College Counseling, the Coordinator helps prepare students for their future educational endeavors.

Peer Tutoring

Peer tutoring can be coordinated through the Learning Support Coordinator. This service is provided by vetted upper school students who volunteer their time to mentor upper school students.
