Drama
The goal of the drama program at Greensboro Day School is to foster students’ individual creative expression and communication skills through working in an ensemble setting.
Through the drama program, students will learn the fundamental skills of performance and technical theatre and will also find opportunities to develop self-esteem, time management, goal setting, and critical listening skills.
Drama in the Curriculum
- Fifth and sixth graders students take a quarter-long drama class. Seventh and eighth graders may choose Drama as one of their arts electives. Students in these classes learn the fundamentals of staging, acting, technical production, elocution, and public speaking.
- The Upper School offers classes in Beginning and Advanced Acting, Show Choir/Cabaret, Play Production, and Public Speaking.
Drama Productions
- Lower school drama is available to students in grades 1–4 through After School Enrichment. This program concentrates on creative dramatics, storytelling, music, and dance.
- The Middle School stages a musical production each year.
- The Upper School stages one musical and one dramatic production each year.
Drama productions are staged most often in the 600-seat Sloan Theatre. Some productions are staged in the Bell Family Studio Theatre, our black box theatre. Students who participate in drama productions will explore the art of theatre through staging, singing, speaking, and dancing. Students on the crew learn about the technical aspects of a show, including lights, sound, set building, and props.
