Interim Middle School Director Appointed

Mark C. Hale, Head of School announced that Dr. Dana Smith has been appointed as the Interim Director of the Middle School for the 2019-2020 school year, beginning July 1. Current Middle School Director, Mr. Barry Davis has accepted a Head of School position at St. Anne's Episcopal School in Delaware.
Dana is an experienced leader and long-standing member of the Greensboro Day School community and Strategic Leadership Team. She currently serves as the Director of Technology at GDS where she oversees a 7-person department and develops the vision of technology use across divisions. Dana also teaches an Applied Computer Technology course and serves as an Upper School advisor. She often teaches parent education classes on digital citizenship and technology. Dana was instrumental in bringing Laura Tierney of The Social Institute to GDS as our 2019 McLendon Speaker.
Dana knows the community and has been an active participant in many roles over the past 21 years. Her connection to GDS began as a parent to Lucy ’11 and Reid ’14 before joining the school as the Director of Summer Programs in 2004. She also worked as the Middle School Technology Coordinator before taking on her current role in 2006.
Dana has a bachelor's degree in cognitive science from Brown University and a master's degree and Ph.D. in psychology from Yale University.
As previously announced, Tracie Catlett, Greensboro Day School's incoming Head of School, will be forming a new search committee this fall to begin a national search for our permanent Middle School Director to start in July of 2020.
