Announcing the 2022 Brooks Sabbatical Recipient
Congratulations to upper school English teacher Mara Montana, who is the 2022 Brooks Sabbatical recipient! This prestigious award, presented annually since 1996, provides a unique travel and learning experience for a GDS faculty member. The Brooks Sabbatical is possible thanks to an endowment created by Dr. Jean Brooks, one of our school’s founding members.
Mara plans to use the award to travel with her family to Montana (where else?), where she will spend time exploring, hiking, fly-fishing, and discovering the state’s natural beauty. Her Sabbatical will take her back to her first year of teaching, when Mara taught A River Runs Through It, set in the state of Montana. She hopes that this experience will enrich her current English classes, show students the process of keeping a journal for personal growth, and apply what she learns in the wilderness in Montana in planning for future Junior Backpacking experiences.
A 10-year GDS veteran teacher, Mara serves as the co-coordinator of the Junior Backpacking Trip and coach of the middle school girls basketball team. She also serves as advisor for the Intramural and Get Outdoors clubs.
Other Brooks Sabbatical recipients in the current GDS faculty include Kim Burroughs, Trish Morris, Don Lahey, Kelly Sipe, Kathy Gillespie, Karen Baldwin, Jose Navarro, Carey Jackson-Adams, and Marvella Taylor. They have traveled to four continents around the world. These life-changing experiences have also enriched Greensboro Day School, the faculty, and our students.
