2018 Brooks Endowment Sabbatical Recipient Chosen

Since 1996, Greensboro Day School has annually selected a member of the faculty to receive funding for a summer sabbatical. Faculty members submit proposals that are reviewed by members of the Head of School’s Council. Proposals must include a description of the anticipated travel and explain how the time used will benefit the teacher and their students.

Middle School Spanish teacher José Navarro has been selected as the 2018 Brooks Sabbatical recipient. Señor Navarro has taught at Greensboro Day School for 13 years and previously served as an ESL liaison for Chatham County Schools. While at GDS, he has also served as a 5th and 8th grade advisor, been a member of the diversity and admission committees, and represented GDS as a graduate of Other Voices.

Señor Navarro has chosen to travel to Guatemala where he plans to gain a deeper understanding of both the ancient traditions and modern ways of this country that he will use in his Spanish classes. In his application, he wrote that he wants to travel there to learn to be more inclusive and use the experience to deliver dynamic learning opportunities to all students.  He hopes this trip will increase his own cultural competence and empathy towards others.

Señor Navarro will be joined by his family on this trip, where they will also be immersed in this unique community.

The Brooks Endowment for Sabbatical Leave was established by Dr. Jean Brooks in 1996. The sabbatical encourages writing, research, and unique cultural experiences with the sabbatical covering the cost of the recipient’s trip. Twenty previous recipients have taken them to Costa Rica, Italy, Guinea, Greece, Ireland, France, Maine, England, China, and more.
Greensboro Day School develops the intellectual, ethical, and interpersonal foundations students need to become constructive contributors to the world.
