City of Greensboro Passes Resolution Honoring Coach Freddy Johnson 

During the Greensboro City Council meeting on September 2, the Council passed a resolution recognizing Varsity Boys Basketball Coach and Director of Basketball Operations Freddy Johnson.

The resolution notes that Coach Johnson currently holds the most wins for a high school coach in North Carolina history. With an overall record of 1,221–333 (a winning average of 78.6%), he is one of only six coaches to achieve the 1,200 wins milestone. Under his guidance, the Bengals have advanced to the North Carolina state championship game an impressive 22 times in the past 37 seasons, capturing the championship trophy a record 13 times in the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA).

The resolution also notes that Coach Johnson has received multiple honors in his long career, including USA Today 2015 North Carolina Coach of the Year; inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2016; 2017 National Coach of the Year by BallisLife; 2020 recognition with the Morgan Wootten Award for Lifetime Achievement in Coaching High School Basketball by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame; and honored by MaxPreps as one of the Top 100 High School Coaches in the country across all sports.
