Debate Team Receives Hysjulien Award

At the North Carolina High School Ethics Bowl on January 27, the GDS Debate Team was awarded the Jamie Hysjulien Spirit of the NCHSEB Award for best demonstrating the values of the event: respect, civility, courtesy for others, thoughtfulness, and sportsmanship. The recipient of the award is voted on by all teams participating in the NCHSEB.

This competition marks the first time in a number of years that GDS has fielded a debate team. Led by coach Connor McDade, the students prepared for months for this competition.

At the event, schools from across the region collaboratively discuss and analyze 16 cases that explore complex, controversial topics from many industries and fields. This year’s cases demanded critical thinking, philosophical questioning, and the use of ethical frameworks to explore topics such as TikTok, AI artwork, space exploration, child labor laws, censorship, medical controversies, and more.

Congratulations to the team and Coach McDade!
