The 2022–23 school year started with fantastic momentum and history-making enrollment. We welcomed 877 students on the first day of school, including 191 new students—the largest number of new students since 1972 and the second-largest number of new students in the school’s 53-year history!
GDS has been both strategic and intentional about supporting our current growth and building for future growth with new hires and campus renovations. We are expanding our learning support team, increasing academic offerings, increasing arts support, and making plans to build a robust intramural program. We have assessed the needs of our athletic program as well, and just like other top independent schools in the country, we have determined that we need additional resources that make sense for GDS students, families, and programs.
Beginning this fall, Freddy Johnson has been appointed as the new GDS Director of Basketball Operations for boys and girls in grades 5–12. Freddy will oversee the basketball program, basketball budget, and gym operations and continue as varsity boys basketball head coach. Freddy is excited to focus his time on our outstanding boys and girls basketball program and to continue his support for all of the GDS athletic teams.
In partnership with Freddy, GDS welcomes an Interim Athletic Director to support the growth of all of our athletic teams in grades 5–12. This new model supports the growth in athletics at GDS and aligns our school with the athletic office structure in independent schools our size and resembles other schools that have programs with nationally acclaimed status.
Craig Ashley will join Greensboro Day School on September 6 as our Interim Athletic Director. Craig has been the Athletic Director for Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, Florida, for the past 11 years and served the school as Head Athletic Trainer since 1999. Craig holds a B.A. and M.S. in Exercise and Sports Sciences from the University of Florida and currently consults the Saint Andrew’s School athletic department remotely during his transition to North Carolina. Saint Andrew’s, a PK–12 day and boarding school, enrolls over 1,200 students and offers 19 sports and 70 teams. Craig and his wife Carmen recently moved to Greensboro, where they are raising two daughters: Ellie, a freshman at the University of Florida, and Emily, a future class of 2027 Bengal.
We welcome Craig to GDS and congratulate Freddy on this milestone for both the Athletic Department and Greensboro Day School. We appreciate Freddy’s past, current, and future work on behalf of GDS and look forward to seeing him on the court!
