The North Carolina Athletic Trainers’ Association announced last week that former Assistant Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer Jon Schner, LAT, ATC, will be inducted into its prestigious Hall of Fame. The announcement cites Jon’s contributions to the field of athletic training, combined with an unwavering commitment to athlete safety, education, and advocacy.
Prior to his retirement in 2024, Jon served the GDS community with dedication and distinction as a full-time faculty member for 27 years. His legacy includes his instrumental role on the NCISAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, where he spearheaded the development and implementation of policies enhancing athletic trainer coverage statewide. As a representative on the NCATA Board and an advocate for private schools, Jon strengthened communication and collaboration within the athletic training community. His national contributions include service with the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association and the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research.
Jon has been honored with the NCATA Lifesaver Award and the American Red Cross Lifesaver Award. Beyond his professional achievements, his dedication extends to mentoring students, managing safety initiatives, and providing emergency care, earning him the respect and admiration of his peers.
Jon, along with Ashley Long, PhD, LAT, ATC, CBIS, will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame at the annual NCATA symposium in Winston-Salem on March 8, 2025.
