Former GDS teacher and coach Don Woodfield passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2023. Don served at Greensboro Day School from 1988–1997, during which time he taught PE and coached multiple sports, including varsity girls basketball and boys and girls varsity tennis.
Don served as head coach of the varsity girls basketball team from 1989–1994. He also served as head varsity boys tennis coach from 1989–1997, winning the PACIS Conference championship in 1989, 1990, 1997 and the NCISAA State Championship in 1989—the first state championship in our boys tennis program history. Don was the head varsity girls tennis coach from 1989–1996, winning the PACIS Conference championship in 1991, 1992, 1995, and 1996 and finishing as NCISAA state runners-up in 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1995. Don was honored as PACIS Coach of the Year multiple times: 1989 and 1990 for boys tennis and 1990–1992 for girls tennis.
After leaving GDS in 1997, Don continued his career as teacher and coach at the O’Neal School in Southern Pines. Most recently, he worked at Pinehurst Resort, where he served initially as Assistant Tennis Professional and then as Pickleball Coordinator.
