Ken Field Named 2026 Brooks Sabbatical Recipient

Congratulations to Ken Field, Chair of the Physical Education Department, who has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Brooks Sabbatical.

Established in 1996, the Brooks Sabbatical is a prestigious annual award that supports national or international travel as a foundation for study, research, and personal growth. The sabbatical is made possible through an endowment created by Dr. Jean Brooks, one of the School’s founding members.

For his sabbatical, Ken will travel to Norway to explore the country’s distinctive approach to health, wellness, and outdoor living.

“I am especially drawn to how Norwegians prioritize well-being not as an extracurricular pursuit, but as a shared responsibility across schools, families, and communities,” Ken said. “By immersing myself in this environment, I hope to better understand how these cultural values can be adapted to enrich our students’ lives and the broader community they belong to.”

During his time abroad, Ken will study Norway’s wellness education practices firsthand and reflect on how they might inform Greensboro Day School’s approach to physical education and well-being. His plans include attending an outdoor education conference, visiting the Oslo International School, and embracing friluftsliv—the Norwegian philosophy that time spent outdoors is essential to daily life—through experiences such as hiking and kayaking in the fjords.
