McLendon Speaker Dr. Rebecca Winthrop Shares Research on Teen Learning

Greensboro Day School welcomed education expert Dr. Rebecca Winthrop to campus on March 2, 2026, as the final speaker in the 2025–26 McLendon Speaker Series.

Drawing on research from her book The Disengaged Teen and years of studying student learning, Dr. Winthrop explored patterns behind adolescent disengagement and shared strategies to help parents better support their teens. She introduced the four modes of learning outlined in her work, explaining how understanding a student’s learning mode can help adults recognize when teens are disengaged and guide them toward greater motivation and curiosity.

Dr. Winthrop also discussed how today’s digital environment, including the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, is shaping how young people learn and interact with information.

Dr. Winthrop is director of the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University. Her presentation concluded this year’s McLendon Speaker Series.

The McLendon Speaker Series is an educational lecture series produced by Greensboro Day School. The series features national and local experts speaking on current topics in the fields of education and parenting.
