McLendon Speaker Gemma Sisia Highlights the Power of Education

Greensboro Day School welcomed Gemma Sisia, founder of the School of St Jude in Tanzania, on October 22, 2025, as the second speaker in our McLendon Speaker Series.

Ms. Sisia described St Jude’s mission of fighting poverty through education and recounted the incredible story of how the school has grown from three students and one volunteer teacher to an institution that now provides free, high-quality education to more than 1,800 students each year.

The audience also heard from Dr. Suleiman Mohammed, an alumnus of the school’s first graduating class. He reflected on how the School of St Jude changed the course of his life and described his path from student to practicing physician. Dr. Suleiman currently works in general medicine at Tanzania’s largest hospital and will soon begin a residency in emergency medicine.
