Tamara Thorpe ’15 Named PTAC Girls Basketball Coach of the Year

Varsity girls basketball coach Tamara Thorpe ’15 has been named PTAC Coach of the Year. Coach Thorpe took on head coaching responsibilities for the varsity girls basketball team in 2021.

During her four years at GDS, Coach Thorpe was a standout member of the basketball and track and field teams. She is the school’s all-time leading scorer in basketball (both boys and girls) with 2,248 points. She helped lead the Bengals to two team appearances (2012 and 2014) in the NCISAA State Championship Finals. She was named All-Conference and All-State three times in her high school career and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee. Coach Thorpe’s jersey is one of seven that has been retired at GDS.

After GDS, Coach Thorpe attended USC-Upstate for three years before transferring to the University of North Georgia. In her single season at UNG, she led the team in scoring and was named North Georgia’s Women’s Basketball MVP. During her college career, she surpassed 1,000 career points and led UNG to its first NCAA Elite Eight appearance in program history.
