Varsity Boys Basketball Repeats as State Champions

The varsity boys basketball team capped a dominant season with a 62–34 win over No. 2 seed Concord Academy in the NCISAA 3A state championship game at Novant Health Fieldhouse.

With a defense that shut the Eagles down and 17 points from sophomore Micah Gunter, the Bengals secured their third state title in four years and tied New Hanover High School for the most state championships in state history with 14.

The championship also marked the program’s most successful season ever, setting a new school record with 36 wins.

Head coach Freddy Johnson, who has led the Bengals since 1977, praised his team’s commitment. “I’m so proud of this team—the effort they had and the defense they played,” Johnson said. “They loved coming to practice. At the end of the year, I literally had to run them out of the gym.”
